McConnell leads Saint Mary’s past MVSU 87-52

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) — Mickey McConnell scored 22 points, and Matthew Dellavedova added 14, leading Saint Mary’s to an 87-52 victory over Mississippi Valley State in the South Padre Island Classic on Sunday.

Rob Jones had 13 points and six rebounds for the Gaels (4-0), while Tim Williams had a team-high nine rebounds.

Jason Holmes led the Delta Devils (0-3) with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Saint Mary’s shot 46.8 percent from the field and held the Delta Devils to 30.0 percent shooting.

McConnell made 8 of 12 shots from the field and 6 of 9 from 3-point range.

After building a 41-28 halftime lead, the Gaels opened the second half with a 21-4 run, extending their advantage to 62-32 with 10:55 left. McConnell hit two 3s and had 10 points during the spurt, while Jones scored seven and had a three-point play.
