ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is playing so well he’s earned the chance to remain the team’s starter beyond this season.
Coach Chan Gailey gave the journeyman backup his biggest vote of confidence to date Wednesday. Crediting Fitzpatrick for playing “extremely well,” Gailey said it would be “dumb” not to consider him for the starting job next year.
Gailey did caution not to read much into what he said. But his comments were a departure from the past after previously sidestepping questions about Fitzpatrick’s future.
Fitzpatrick is 2-6 and has 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He rallied the Bills from a 21-point deficit to beat Cincinnati last weekend.
Buffalo (2-8) hosts Pittsburgh (7-3) on Sunday.
