RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Organizers of the 2016 Olympics say they support the law enforcement efforts to combat the weeklong wave of violence that has swept Rio de Janeiro.

Organizing committee president Carlos Nuzman says “we publicly express total support to the public security policy being conducted.”

He says Rio “can assure that the Games in 2016 … will take place in an atmosphere of total security.”

Over the past two years, authorities have established permanent police posts in 13 slums as part of an effort to bring basic services to the communities and rid them of violence related to drug trafficking.

Beside the Olympics, Rio will also host the final of the 2014 World Cup.
