BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — UAB football coach Neil Callaway will return next season, but his defensive coordinator won’t be back.

UAB athletic director Brian Mackin said Monday that Callaway will be given a one-year extension through 2012 pending approval from the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees.

Callaway said Eric Schumann won’t be back as defensive coordinator after four seasons.

The Blazers finished 4-8 this season and dropped three of their last four games. UAB lost four games by five points or less.

The team ranked seventh in Conference USA in scoring defense and sixth in total defense.
