PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt is declining to speculate about his future at the school, saying he’s focused on Saturday’s regular season-ending game at Cincinnati and not on the Panthers’ disappointing season.
Pitt, ranked No. 15 when the season began, was a near-unanimous pick to win the Big East Conference in a preseason media poll. But the Panthers’ 35-10 loss at home to rival West Virginia on Friday means the Panthers (6-5, 4-2) must beat Cincinnati (4-7, 2-4) to assure themselves of a bowl bid.
Wannstedt, asked Monday why the Panthers’ season hasn’t been better, blamed an injury to star defensive end Greg Romeus, inexperience and running back Dion Lewis’ drop-off. He did not mention coaching or preparation.
Wannstedt is under contract through 2014. He signed a two-year extension in March.
