MARINETTE, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin high school students held hostage by a classmate spent hours chatting and laughing with the gunman about hunting and fishing to keep him calm.

Authorities say the 15-year-old gunman shot himself Monday as police entered the room. His condition is not known. None of the hostages were harmed.

Zach Campbell was one of the students in the class at Marinette High School. He says the situation began when the student pulled out a handgun and shot a film projector. He then held the 23 students and a teacher hostage for five hours.

Campbell says the gunman seemed depressed and was not interested in talking with the teacher. But Campbell said the gunman did talk to the other students.
