SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The city of Spokane is sending layoff notices to 116 employees.

The notices went Friday to 65 employees of the police department, 13 in the fire department and people in other departments.

The number of employees who’ll actually lose their jobs is likely to be smaller, because some layoff notices will result in demotions rather than job cuts.

The city needs to close a $12 million shortfall in its 2011 budget.
