ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Trevor Vittatoe threw three touchdown passes, two to Kris Adams, and UTEP defeated New Mexico 38-20 on Saturday.

Adams finished with five receptions for 141 yards and caught scoring passes of 49 and 48 yards for the Miners (4-1).

The Lobos (0-5) used big plays early to remain close, with Anthony Hooks returning a blocked field-goal attempt 45 yards to tie the score at 14 late in the first quarter.

New Mexico also took a quick 7-0 lead following a fumble recovery and a 28-yard drive capped by a 4-yard quarterback keeper from Tarean Austin. But three plays later, Vittatoe hit Adams for the first of the two long touchdown tosses. The second came at the end of the third quarter, leaving UTEP ahead 31-14.

UTEP compiled 435 yards of total offense, with Joe Banyard going 15 for 90 on the ground. UNM managed only 229 total offense yards.
