NEWPORT, Wales (AP) — The Europeans are picking up where they left off, following one of their greatest performances with a strong start to the final day of the Ryder Cup.
Already holding a three-point lead after wiping out the Americans on Sunday, Europe is ahead in seven matches and all-square in another in early play Monday. The U.S. is leading only four matches, which would be far short of the 712 points it needs to retain the trophy won two years ago at Valhalla.
This is the first Monday finish in Ryder Cup history. The event was forced to an extra day because of torrential rains at Celtic Manor, but the singles are being played in perfect conditions. The early fog burned off and most of the players are now in shortsleeves under a brilliant blue sky.
