STOCKHOLM (AP) — Sweden will host the women’s European soccer championships in 2013.
UEFA announced the decision on its website Monday, with the Netherlands finishing second in its bid to host the 12-team tournament.
Swedish Football Association spokesman Jonas Nystedt said it is “very proud and happy to organize the tournament,” adding he hopes it will lead to an increase in female soccer participation in the Scandinavian country.
The tournament will be staged in different cities around the country in July 2013. The final will be held at the new national soccer stadium in Solna, which is scheduled to be completed in 2012.
Qualifying for the tournament starts in September 2011.
