Oregon county tries GPS to track gangs

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Multnomah County is going to try using GPS technology to help fight gang violence in the Portland area.

The county Board of Commissioners late last month approved funding for a five-month pilot program to place five GPS bracelets on youths involved in gangs.

The bracelets would be reserved for offenders already under county jurisdiction who officials consider the most likely to participate in violent gang activity.

The Oregonian reports the program troubles some civil libertarians and youth advocates who are concerned about the rights of teens.

Multnomah County already uses GPS to monitor some adult offenders, and its use is growing nationally to keep tabs on probationers and parolees.

Multnomah County officials say they hope the units serve as both deterrent and crime-solving tool for gang violence.
