SEQUIM BAY, Wash. (AP) — Scientists at a laboratory at Sequim Bay on the Olympic Peninsula are hoping to learn what effects underwater power generating gear might have on marine life.

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Sequim Marine Research Operation is using giant coils to find out whether electromagnetism affects the behavior or reproduction of fish, crabs and other sea creatures.

The Peninsula Daily News reports that the two-year project will help the Snohomish County Public Utility District, which plans to place two 400-ton power generators in Admiralty Inlet in 2012. The turbines, about 65 feet high, will use tides in the inlet to produce power.
