OBERHOFEN, Switzerland (AP) — Former Olympic champions Kjetil Andre Aamodt and Pernilla Wiberg will advise skiing’s governing body on improving equipment to reduce injuries in Alpine racing.

The International Ski Federation says Aamodt and Wiberg are part of a six-member expert panel that will generate ideas to make racers’ equipment safer, after a season when many medal prospects missed the Vancouver Olympics because of serious injuries.

Olympic downhill champion Didier Defago has already been ruled out of the entire season after injuring his left knee in training.

FIS says the advisory group will report to a committee that is monitoring injury trends.

FIS also has long-term research projects with an Oslo clinic and the University of Salzburg.
