SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan has named Joe Thornton the team’s captain for this season.

McLellan made the announcement in Stockholm on Thursday. The Sharks open the season Friday in Sweden against Columbus.

Thornton was an alternate captain last season to Rob Blake. When Blake retired after the season, McLellan needed to find a replacement. Thornton had previously been a captain in Boston.

Defenseman Dan Boyle will once again be an alternate this season. Forwards Ryane Clowe and Patrick Marleau will split time as the other alternate, with Marleau getting the role at home and Clowe on the road.
