Demolition of the now-obsolete two-lane freeway overpass at Pioneer Street in Ridgefield is nearly complete.
Late Thursday and into Friday morning, the west end of the overpass was brought down by a giant pincer-like excavator.
The demolition is among the last tasks in the $23 million project to rebuild the interchange of Interstate 5 and state Highway 501, also known as Pioneer Street.
The original freeway overpass, constructed in the mid-1960s, was officially replaced when contractors shifted Pioneer Street to the new four-lane overpass on Aug. 17.
