GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy is offering support for what could become the world’s largest wind energy project, planned for the Columbia Plateau in Eastern Oregon.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced Friday the department is offering to guarantee $1.3 billion of the financing for the $2 billion Caithness Shepherds Flat project.

Plans call for building 338 turbines in remote parts of Morrow and Gilliam counties. They are slated to go on line in September 2012. The power will be sold to Southern California Edison.
