MONTESANO, Wash. (AP) — A manslaughter charge has been filed against a Hoquiam man in the death of his 4-month-old son.

KXRO reports the assault charge against 21-year-old Michael Q. Vanderveur was upgraded Thursday Grays Harbor Superior Court in response to the death Tuesday at a hospital in Tacoma.

Vanderveur said Sunday the baby was injured in a fall, but doctors told officers the head injuries weren’t consistent with a fall.

The Aberdeen Daily World reports the parents were involved in a custody dispute and there had been repeated contacts with sheriff’s deputies, Aberdeen police and state child welfare workers.

Child Protective Services had four referrals regarding the infant in a three-week period.
