EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A convicted sex offender has been charged with second-degree murder in the August killing of a woman at her Monroe apartment.

The Daily Herald says the charge was filed Thursday in Snohomish County Superior Court against 45-year-old Michael N. Benjamin. He’s accused in the strangulation death of 36-year-old Angela Pettifer. Benjamin lived in the same apartment building as the woman and told police he helped an intoxicated Pettifer to her apartment. However, he denies stepping inside, where Pettifer’s body was found.

Benjamin, who is being held on $1 million bail, was convicted in 2006 of three counts of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.
