Lightning knocks out power at large Seattle lock

SEATTLE (AP) — A lightning strike late Sunday has knocked out electrical power needed to operate the large lock used by ship traffic at Seattle’s Chittenden Locks.

Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Patricia Graesser (GRAY’-sir) says crews are working to restore electrical service, but the lock isn’t expected to reopen until Tuesday. The small lock, used mostly by pleasure craft and tour boats, remains open.

The locks in Ballard connect Puget Sound and the Lake Washington Ship Canal. Graesser says this is the slow time of year for ship and barge traffic through the large lock, though some vessels are expected to be delayed. She says crews think the lightning bolt struck a light pole.
