SEATTLE (AP) — Supporters of the plan to replace Seattle’s aging Alaskan Way Viaduct with a $2 billion tunnel have talked about the benefits of opening the downtown waterfront.

But, The Seattle Times reports Monday the tunnel would carry one-third less traffic than the viaduct, and traffic on the surface Alaskan Way boulevard could triple as drivers seek more direct routes and avoid tolls.

The paper says engineers expect overall central-city congestion to be similar to today.
