ATLANTA (AP) — A new government report shows Hispanics in the United States outlive whites by more than two years and blacks by more than seven.

It’s the first time a separate life expectancy has been calculated for Hispanics. The report says that a Hispanic born in 2006 could expect to live for more than 80 years.

The report is the strongest evidence yet of the so-called Hispanic paradox — long life expectancy for a population that has a large share of poor, undereducated members.

Researchers have seen signs of Hispanic longevity for years, but acknowledge most people assume whites live longer.

A leading theory is that Hispanic immigrants are among the healthiest from their countries.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the report Wednesday.
