SEATTLE (AP) — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is giving two Washington organizations grants to help pay for planning communities in the Puget Sound area.

HUD Secretary Ron Sims has awarded $1.5 million to the Thurston County Planning Council and $5 million to the Puget Sound Regional Council. The grants are among 45 given Thursday to 45 organizations across the country under a HUD program to encourage sustainable communities.

The grants will help pay for planning land use, economic development, transportation and other needs.
