BOSTON (AP) — Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a one-year contract that pays him $750,000 in the major leagues and $250,000 in the minors.

Thursday’s deal, which avoided salary arbitration, is not guaranteed.

The 25-year-old, a 2003 first-round draft pick by Atlanta, was acquired from Texas on July 31 and hit .158 (3 for 19) in 10 games. He batted a combined .248 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs at Triple-A for the Rangers and Red Sox. He spent time on the DL because of a strained upper back and then struggled with his throwing at Triple-A before being traded to Boston.

Saltalamacchia had a split contract this year that paid him at an annual rate of $418,540 in the majors and $246,540 in the minors.
