Feds disclose witnesses in upcoming Bonds trial

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Federal prosecutors are gearing up for the start of Barry Bonds’ perjury trial in March, submitting an outline of their legal strategy and a list of witnesses that includes former baseball players they intend to call.

The list and the trial memo disclosed in court filings Friday are nearly identical to the legal papers prosecutors filed in February 2009 as they prepared for a March 2009 trial. The start of that trial was delayed while prosecutors pursued an appeal of a judge’s order barring them from presenting key evidence to the jury.

The prosecutors said Friday they plan to call Jason Giambi, who played for the Colorado Rockies during the 2010 season. They also intend to call six retired baseball players and former football player Larry Izzo.

Bonds, a former San Francisco Giant, has pleaded not guilty to charges he lied to a grand jury in December 2003 when he denied knowingly taking performance-enhancing drugs.
