Trainer touts Zenyatta for Horse of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Zenyatta’s trainer says the unbeaten superstar mare deserves to be Horse of the Year regardless of how she does in next month’s Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The 6-year-old horse has won all her races and goes for 20 in a row on Nov. 6 when she attempts to defend her title in the Classic at Churchill Downs.

Trainer John Shirreffs says even if Zenyatta doesn’t win the 114-mile Classic she should be given the honor because of her perfect record and the buzz she’s brought to racing.

Zenyatta lost to Rachel Alexandra in the Horse of the Year vote last year. Shirreffs says if Zenyatta isn’t selected this year it “would almost be too much.”

Blame and Preakness champion Lookin At Lucky are expected to challenge Zenyatta in the Classic.
