BEND, Ore. (AP) — A soldier from central Oregon is among the 26 Oregon veterans suing a former Halliburton subsidiary for toxic chemical exposure in Iraq.

Aaron St. Clair of Redmond was among the Oregon National Guard troops assigned to provide security to private contractors in Iraq in 2003.

St. Clair spent two days at a water treatment plant in Basra, a city in southern Iraq, where bags of a bright yellow powdery substance had spilled over the ground.

It turned out they were filled with an anti-corrosive chemical that contains hexavalent chromium, a toxic substance that has been linked to a long list of health problems, including cancer.

The 36-year-old St. Clair told The Bulletin in Bend he now suffers from skin rashes, digestive problems and gets short of breath without much effort.
