Hungry animals add to S. Ore. vintner problems

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — The delay in the Oregon wine grape harvest caused by a wet spring and mild summer has given hungry birds and animals a chance to plunder vineyards in the Rogue Valley.

The Mail Tribune reports that starlings and cowbirds have picked away at the grapes at Weisinger’s of Ashland.

Owner John Weisinger has also used trail cameras to record a nocturnal parade of black bears rummaging through his vineyard.

The weather has delayed the harvest about three weeks. But recent warm weather may help wineries turn the harvest into a good vintage.
