SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda (AP) — David Toms has opened with a 4-under 67 to take a one-shot lead over Ernie Els in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

This is the first day of the four-man event for major champions, and alternates were the stars Tuesday at Port Royal Golf Course.

Toms is filling in for British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, who is recovering from an ankle injury. He was 5 under through 10 holes and threatening to build a big lead until a bogey on the 11th.

Els joined the field when Masters champion Phil Mickelson chose not to play. He birdied the 11th to stay in the mix and finished with another birdie for a 68.

U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell had a 72. PGA champion Martin Kaymer opened with a 74.
