NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — New Haven’s professional tennis tournament is becoming a women’s-only event, with Yale and several companies replacing a single title sponsor.
The tournament, which had been one of just four sanctioned by both the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA Tour, will be called the New Haven Open at Yale in 2011 and will be a WTA-only event.
Tournament and Yale officials made the announcement Thursday at the Connecticut Tennis Center. The New Haven Register reported the sponsorship, which also includes Aetna and American Express, is for at least three years.
Pilot Pen had been the tournament’s main sponsor for 15 years, but ended its relationship after this year’s tournament, citing financial reasons.
