NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are finishing with modest gains after pulling back from a rally that pushed prices near their highest levels of the year.

Shares fell from early peaks Thursday after mixed news on unemployment and signs that growth in China slowed in the third quarter.

Netflix rose nearly 13 percent. Bank of America fell another 3.3 percent on worries over how it handled foreclosures.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow is up 39, or 0.5 percent, to close at 11,147. Earlier it had briefly climbed above its highest closing level of the year.

The S&P 500 is up 2, or 0.2 percent, at 1,180, while the Nasdaq is up 2, or 0.1 percent, at 2,460.

Volume on the New York Stock Exchange came to 1.1 billion shares.
