Fredricks beats Olympic star Davis in 500 meters

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) — Tucker Fredricks upset Olympic medalist Shani Davis on Friday to win the 500 meters at the U.S. Single Distance Long Track Speed Skating Championships.

Fredricks finished in 35.45 seconds to beat Davis by 0.39 seconds. The speedskater from Janesville, Wis., won a head-to-head match-up in the same pairing against Davis, who has won two gold and two silver medals in the past two Winter Olympics.

Three days of racing through Sunday will determine the U.S. World Cup teams.

Jonathan Kuck of Champaign, Ill., won the 5,000-meter race in 6 minutes, 22.59 seconds, while Heather Richardson of West Jordan, Utah, won the women’s 500 in 38.41. Jilleanne Rookard from Woodhaven, Mich., took the 3,000 in 4:08.86.
