Minor settlement of Seattle viaduct column

SEATTLE (AP) — The state Transportation Department says a weekend inspection of Seattle’s Alaskan Way viaduct found that a column had settled by a half-inch since July.

The department says the column in downtown Seattle has settled nearly an inch and a half since the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake. However, it says that’s still well within the 6-inch threshold for column safety.

Officials say the dilapidated double-decker roadway that carries Highway 99 along Seattle’s waterfront is still safe, but needs to be inspected often. The state plans a $2 billion tunnel to replace the structure.
