ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s foreign minister says the country’s military will deal with a key Taliban sanctuary along the Afghan border on its own timeline despite U.S. pressure.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi spoke Sunday after returning from Washington following the latest round of high level strategic talks with the Obama administration.
The U.S. has pressed Pakistan to target Taliban militants based in the country’s North Waziristan tribal area who regularly launch cross-border attacks against foreign troops in Afghanistan.
Qureshi said Pakistan has its own priorities and must focus on operations it has already launched in its tribal belt before turning to North Waziristan.
