CHICAGO (AP) — A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg is not expected to land on the Chicago Cubs’ coaching staff next season.
The person, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly, says Sandberg could continue to manage the Cubs’ Triple-A Iowa affiliate if he wants.
The Cubs are looking for a bench coach after Alan Trammell left Tuesday to take a similar spot on former teammate Kirk Gibson’s staff with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Cubs recently hired interim manager Mike Quade as Lou Piniella’s full-time replacement. Quade was promoted from third base coach to run the Cubs for the final six weeks of the season after Piniella retired.
