HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabwe’s soccer association says it has fired its chief executive amid an investigation into alleged match-fixing that implicates a string of the country’s top players, coaches and administrators.
Henrietta Rushwaya was fired Tuesday for poor administration. However, Ralph Maganga, a lawyer for ZIFA, said match-fixing charges against her relating to the national team’s Asian tour last December had been withdrawn pending further investigation.
In sworn statements, Zimbabwe players and officials have said they were paid between $500 and $1,500 to throw matches for an Asian betting syndicate on a trip to Thailand and Malaysia.
They face lifetime bans, threatening the future of professional soccer in the nation.
