NEW YORK (AP) — A former mob underboss whose turncoat testimony helped convict dozens of associates has been sentenced to time served.
Salvatore Vitale was sentenced Friday afternoon in Brooklyn. He spent about seven years behind bars.
He admitted to 11 killings between 1976 and 1999. He pleaded guilty in April 2003 to racketeering conspiracy and murder-in-aid of racketeering.
Prosecutors recommended less than a life term for the former Bonanno crime family leader. The government says his cooperation was extraordinary.
