BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romania’s anti-corruption prosecutors are investigating the country’s football federation president over claims he took a bribe to vote for the 2012 European Championship to be held in Poland and Ukraine.
Mircea Sandu denied the allegations Friday.
UEFA said Thursday it was prepared to take legal action against former Cypriot Football Association official Spyros Marangos, who alleged the championship was corruptly awarded, after he failed to provide evidence.
Romania’s Anti-Corruption Department said Friday it was investigating the claims.
Marangos told a German newspaper that UEFA officials sold the tournament rights for $15 million in 2007. Eastern European neighbors Poland and Ukraine defeated favored Italy 8-4 in a vote of UEFA executive committee members.
