BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier hopes to persuade American goalkeeper Brad Friedel to stay at the club beyond the end of the seasons.

The 39-year-old Friedel joined Villa from Blackburn in 2008 and has played well. His contract expires at the end of the season.

Asked about a new deal for Friedel, Houllier says it is a case of “definitely yes.”

Houllier added that “at the moment, he’s doing a good job, a very good job.”

Friedel, who made 82 appearances for the United States, played for the Columbus Crew, Galatasaray and Brondby before moving to England in 1997, when he joined Liverpool.

He spent three seasons at Anfield before moving to Blackburn, where he played 287 matches.
