CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Austin Peay’s tailback trio led the way in a 38-6 victory over Cumberland in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night.
Terrence Holt led the Governors with 127 yards rushing, highlighted by a 42-yard second-quarter touchdown run. Wesley Kitts added 109 yards on the ground, scoring on a 68-yard scamper and his backfield mate Ryan White ran for 87 yards and added a rushing score.
Despite committing 17 penalties and turning the ball over five times, the Governors were able to stay in front with a strong ground game and a stifling defense. Austin Peay held the Bulldogs to just 238 total yards of offense.
The game’s first touchdown came from Austin Peay wide receiver Devin Stark — a former high school quarterback — who took a handoff from quarterback Jake Ryan before tossing a 30-yard touchdown to wideout Darryl Miller.
