MUNICH (AP) — The leader of Munich’s bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics has quit, citing health reasons.

Bogner had announced last week that he is suffering from an unspecified bowel disease.

He told reporters Monday that his illness was “more serious than previously thought” and announced his decision to step down.

Bernard Schwank will take over from 68-year-old Bogner, who said he would continue to be active on the board and assist organizers in marketing and communication.

Munich is competing against Annecy, France, and Pyeongchang, South Korea. The IOC will select the host city in July 2011.
