Investigators determined an overnight fire at a Vancouver apartment complex was caused by a still-lit cigarette discarded on a balcony.

The cause of the Sept. 3 fire was deemed “accidental,” according to Vancouver Fire Capt. Kevin Murray.

The fire caused about $500,000 damage to the Autumn Chase Apartments, 11301 N.E. 7th St.

“Always have a metal can around and away from combustible materials,” advised Murray.

He also suggested keep a metal container filled with water in areas used for smoking.

The apartment of a 64-year-old woman suffered extensive damage in the fire. She was helped out the back patio of her apartment by three men who rushed to her aid as smoke detectors sounded.

There were no serious injuries reported.
