DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — J P’s Gusto beat Jaycito by four lengths Wednesday in the $250,000 Del Mar Futurity on the final day of the track’s summer season.
Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, J P’s Gusto ran 7 furlongs in 1:22.95 and paid $3.60, $3 and $2.40. Jaycito, a 19-1 long shot, returned $14 and $7.80, while Riveting Reason ($4.60) and Indian River ($2.40) finished in a deadheat for third.
The victory, worth $150,000, increased J P Gusto’s career earnings to $337,360.
Jockey Joel Rosario and trainer Doug F. O’Neill wrapped up season titles.
