MONZA, Italy (AP) — Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone expects teams to respect the team orders rule until it is altered.

There’s been some confusion after the sport’s governing body decided to let Ferrari escape with just a fine for ordering driver Felipe Massa to let Fernando Alonso overtake him and win the German Grand Prix.

Ecclestone, who was part of the hearing on the matter, tells The Associated Press the FIA made “the right decision” and teams should be allowed “to run their own strategy the way they want.”

Ferrari was fined $100,000 for using coded messages regarding the pass at the end of the race. The FIA council could have stripped Alonso of the victory or docked the team points.

Red Bull’s Christian Horner believes a precedent has been set with six races left.
