Our Readers’ Views on the Nov. 2 general election

3rd District U.S. representative

Since Ronald Reagan, we’ve seen a precipitous decline in the number of family-wage jobs and in the average income for most Americans. Elect someone who will side with working-class families, who knows that putting jobs in the hands of every working stiff is what keeps our country strong and secure.

Going back to the policies of George W. Bush is not the answer. Didn’t we learn anything from the last eight years? Let’s send Congress a friend of the middle class; let’s give Congress Heck. Let’s get this job done by electing Denny Heck.

Jaime Herrera has a fiscally conservative record in Olympia. She is at the bottom of Evergreen Freedom Foundation’s “Big Spender List” for sponsoring $0 in tax and fee increases in 2010.

If you feel that the growth of federal regulation and spending are out of control, then join me in making sure that our Congressional District is represented by a true conservative, Jaime Herrera.

I’m one of those moderates who support Denny Heck for Congress. Some have called Heck a centrist, which is good in this season of extremists. We need a reasonable, experienced, solidly successful representative with good ideas on job creation. Moderates: Vote and give Congress Heck.

Janice F. Evans

It is easy to decide whom to vote for in the battle between Denny Heck and Jamie Herrera. On their websites they tell voters how they are going to perform in the job. Herrera is going to be looking for local people and businesses to provide solutions. Heck is going to use the government to create a better Southwest Washington.

If voters believe more government programs are what is needed, they should vote for Heck. If one believes that government needs to be reined in, and the people and businesses should produce the results, then they should vote for Herrera.

Vancouver City Council

We feel strongly that the primary role of government is to protect the citizens. That is the primary reason we support Bart Hansen and feel he should be retained on the Vancouver City Council. Hansen has consistently said he will not vote for any city budget that cuts police or fire protection.

We believe Hansen. He will ensure the protection currently provided by the police and fire personnel will be there if and when we need it.

Clark County prosecuting attorney

While criminal experience is important, the primary role of the prosecutor is an administrative or managerial one. Brent Boger has such experience. Only in highly unusual circumstances does the county prosecutor try criminal cases himself.

In these tough economic times, we need a leader who can stretch limited public resources and still provide maximum public safety. We need someone who can balance protecting the public while ensuring fair due process of the accused. I have known Boger for more than nine years and trust him to make judicious use of such resources.

My hometown of Ridgefield is not immune from major crimes. We need an experienced county prosecutor to fairly and efficiently prosecute crime in our community. I am voting for Tony Golik for prosecutor because he’s the only candidate with enough experience to keep our community safe.

Clark County treasurer

Mike Appel is a strongly conservative Republican who wants smaller government rather than larger, less spending rather than more, and more freedom rather than less. He leans toward many libertarian principles. It is time we had a county treasurer who will go through the treasurer’s department and eliminate inefficiencies that will save Clark County taxpayers’ money. After over 26 years of unchallenged complacency, isn’t it time to have a new pair of eyes on the workings of the treasurer’s department along with a new set of innovative solutions? Vote for Mike Appel. I am.

Clark County commissioner

Here in Clark County, we are in the beginning stage of an actual depression due to failed leadership. Alan Svehaug, like the late great Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm from my old hometown of Brooklyn, N.Y., is “unbought and unbossed.” Svehaug is a Republican while I am a liberal Democrat. It makes no difference.

The old boys’ network in Clark County must go. To move forward in this crumbling economy, we need new ideas and new leadership, and have our own concerns heard. We need jobs and a better quality of life. Vote for Svehaug, the better choice for commissioner.

17th District state representative

In the race for the 17th District state representative, Monica Stonier is the real deal. To assume because she is a teacher that she is a mouthpiece for the Washington Education Association is highly inaccurate. Stonier is the kind of grassroots candidate who represents the ideals of working-class residents. She has solid ideas for improving the economy in Clark County. She has worked tirelessly throughout her campaign to connect with voters on both sides. We so desperately need her common-sense leadership during these turbulent economic times.

U.S. Senate

I’m amazed at how much Sen. Patty Murray is in front-page stories of what great things she does for our state. Actually, our state does gets back 88 percent of the taxes paid to feds, but 20 other states get over 100 percent back and our neighbor, Oregon, gets back 98 percent. She recently said our state was punched in the gut. Yes, we were, and those responsible are Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Usually standing front and center with them is our Patty Murray.

Local Tea Party leader Tom Niewulis stated he can’t support Dino Rossi for U.S. senator. Looks like we conservatives will be shooting ourselves in the foot once again. If we don’t band together, we’ll have another six years of Sen. Patty Murray. Is that what Niewulis wants? Tea Party people, Republicans and conservatives have got to unite and vote for Murray’s opponent. It’s the only chance we’ll have to defeat her and start to take our country back.
