Beginning today, on the ninth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, eight Fred Meyer stores in Clark and Cowlitz counties will hand customers lists of items to start building emergency preparedness kits.

The push, borne out of a partnership between Fred Meyer and the Red Cross, is being made to coincide with National Preparedness Month, according to a news release.

As they check-out, customers can buy “virtual blankets” for $4 to donate to the Red Cross for local disaster relief.

“From fires to floods and winter weather, the Red Cross is there when our communities are affected by disaster. This partnership allows SW Washington to be there as well,” wrote Melinda Merrill, Director of Public Affairs for Fred Meyer. “Buying a virtual blanket provides a gift of comfort and hope, and helps the Red Cross help others during this busy season.”

The Red Cross will have volunteers at the eight locations today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Donation cards will be available in stores until Oct. 2.
