Wash. high court allows vote on red-light cameras

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington Supreme Court says it won’t block a local initiative on the future of red-light or speed-zone traffic cameras in Mukilteo.

Anti-tax crusader Tim Eyman is pushing the initiative, which would require the city to hold a public vote before it adds such cameras. It would also restrict the maximum ticket to $20.

Opponents hoped to block the initiative from the Nov. 2 ballot, but The Herald of Everett reports that the high court refused to grant an accelerated review of their claims. The justices said they will hold a hearing on the validity of the initiative, but that likely won’t be scheduled until after the vote is held.
