Portland police on Saturday identified a Vancouver man they believe shot and killed his Portland girlfriend, and then turned the gun on himself, in a North Portland residence last week.

The bodies of Francis “Frank” Masure, 60, of Vancouver and Stephanie Curtis, 42, were found Friday at her apartment in the 2400 block of North Killingsworth Street.

Discovery came after a friend of Curtis’ called Portland police asking for a welfare check at the apartment. Officers arrived and found both subjects dead, leading to an investigation.

Detectives learned of a relationship between the two, Portland police said. Curtis recently reported domestic violence, between Masure and herself, to both Vancouver and Portland police. Based on those reports, she appeared to be ending the relationship.

Sometime Monday or Tuesday, Masure arrived at the apartment. Neighbors reported hearing noise but there were no calls to 911, police said.

Animal Control was called to the location Friday to take custody of Curtis’ eight cats.
