NEW YORK (AP) — A persistent rainstorm has forced postponement of the U.S. Open men’s final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic until Monday, marking the third straight year the season’s final Grand Slam tournament will finish a day late.
Nadal and Djokovic were scheduled to start around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, but the rain began about two hours before and hadn’t stopped by 6:15 p.m., when tournament officials decided to call it a night. They rescheduled it for no earlier than 4 p.m. Monday
Djokovic could use the extra rest. He made it to the final with a grueling five-set win over Roger Federer on Saturday. Nadal won his match in straight sets.
This marks the first three-year string of delayed finishes since the men’s and women’s singles competitions were combined and played at the same site in 1935.
