LONDON (AP) — The world governing body of snooker is proposing lifetime bans for anyone involved in the sport caught betting on any aspect of it.

With the launch of an anti-corruption unit, World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn said Monday that snooker “will be cleaner than clean” and be “the blueprint for sport.”

Former Metropolitan Police commissioner John Stevens has been hired to lead the unit.

Two weeks ago, three-time world snooker champion John Higgins was cleared of frame-fixing allegations but admitted giving the impression to undercover reporters posing as businessmen that he would throw frames for financial gain.

Higgins is still serving a six-month suspension. He will educate youngsters on how to avoid such dangers.
