ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — Disasters like floods, earthquakes and major storms can disrupt vital communications.

But Jerry Eifert of Roseburg and his band of amateur radio operators are good guys to have around in that kind of situation.

When other communication systems fail, they’re the ones who can send for help and talk to the rest of the world.

For the past 17 years, the 65-year-old Eifert has overseen about 40 volunteer radio operators who are trained to broadcast reports in the event of emergencies or disasters.

Eifert told The News-Review in Roseburg that he’s proud of his work making emergency communications systems more effective, even though everybody hopes he doesn’t have to use it.
